Landscape
The Achensee was created after the last ice age as a Mesozoic formed transverse valley between the Karwendel- and the Rofangebirge. A flow of rocks of the side moraines of the Inn Valley glacier blocked the water flowing off in former times into the Inn valley. Today traversing the landscape is a delightful experience around the 6,8 km2 large and up to 133 (!) meters deep lake because of its variance in landscape: Lovely valleys in the west, the gentle giants of the Rofangebirge in the east make the Achensee with its Caribbean turquoise water the most beautiful lake in Tirol.
Recreation & health
The region Achensee has been long recognized as a wellness holiday resort. The title “Tirol’s Sport & Vital Park” at the Achensee denotes much more than just the Wellness Hotels, of which some belong to the best in Austria. An extensive trekking and running program gives credence to that title at the holiday lake. Offers such as Wellness Run Seminars and “Wandern mit Herz”, a heart conditioning program, are included.
Dining
The topic wellness is carried forth in the offerings of the many fine restaurants in the area. From light cuisine dishes to hearty meals, everything is prepared to meet the demands of the most discriminating diner, all using locally available products. The region is renown, beside its fish specialties, above all, for its excellent assortment of game: more than 500 years ago Kaiser Maximilian came here, in order to delight in the local game and fish, including Rehragout, Gamsbraten and Hirschragout. And since then, the kitchen has become even better.
Attractions on the route near the lake Achensee
A small detour can become a short-cut. Those who would rather cross the lake than travel along its banks can take a ship of the Achensee Boat Company from Achensee. If room is available on the ship, a bicycle can be transported at half price. A few kilometers away from Maurach or a 5 minutes foot march from the ship landing place in Pertisau lures a unique attraction: the Vitalberg. Deep under its glistening roof is a museum, dedicated to shale oil, which is extracted from the slate of the Karwendel and converted to wellness products.
